Petite Fashion Challenge #2: Wear It Now, Wear It Later

September 30, 2010

The challenge:

In honor of the fast approaching cool, fall weather, what better way to get ready than to find ways to make your wardrobe do double duty. Pick at least one item in your closet (not jeans, that’s too easy!), and create two outfits, one for spring/summer, and one for fall/winter.

Oh boy. I get so excited about these challenges, but when push comes to shove, I err on the side of neutrals.

Most of my clothes do double duty already so I don’t have many strictly seasonal clothes, not that LA seasons are very dynamic. Still, I wanted to give it a try and show how my clothes can work for warmer and cooler weather.

For this challenge, I picked a cream-colored silk blouse.

I had to break my shopping ban to pick up this top from the Alexa Chung collection for Madewell. It was too pretty to pass up and I’ve been dreaming of a great silk blouse for the longest time. Even though this is a relatively easy staple item, I figured I would dress it up in a way that is a play on menswear.

Summer Outfit – Wear Now

Outfit Details: Alexa Chung for Madewell silk blouse – XS, Banana Republic shorts – 4, American Eagle belt, DIY necklace (friend’s gift), Steve Madden Tuxxedo oxford flats

The color of the blouse doesn’t exactly scream summer, but the billowy top is great for warmer days. Paired with some high-waisted shorts, it adds that vintage kick that I want.

I don’t usually wear short shorts unless it’s over 90 degrees like it is currently. Instead, I usually wear mom shorts…literally. It’s kind of crazy how ridiculous size inflation has become since these shorts from Banana Republic are size 4 and I can barely fit into the 00 now.

The oxford flats adds that menswear inspired element that makes the look very contemporary.

Autumn Outfit – Wear Later

Outfit Details: Alexa Chung for Madewell silk blouse – XS, Madewell skinny jeans – 24, Bitten by SJP vest – S, Free People watch pendant, Corso Como boots

As a transitional outfit into Fall, I switched out the shorts for pants and donned on my riding boots. For additional warmth, I added a corduroy vest for texture. Equestrian no?

Outfit Details: Alexa Chung for Madewell silk blouse – XS, Bitten by SJP vest – S, Banana Republic Martin plaid trousers – 0P, Zara faux suede blazer-XS,  Dolce & Gabbana pumps

In Autumn, layering is a common occurrence, so adding a blazer paired with the vest gives it a strong masculine edge. But the overall look is clearly feminine and it’s a great work outfit too.

Simple, easy, and stylish.

What do you think?

I just love the second outfit. I really like your hair by the way! I’ve never had it at that length in my life because I don’t have the guts. LOL

Thanks! I’m growing it out a bit and it’s almost to the length of my second-shortest haircut. Plus, I’m enjoying the ease of maintaining it. =)

I think the first autumn outfit is totally you! The last outfit is probably too many layers for LA weather (especially the way it’s been lately!) so I don’t know how often you actually get to wear that out :)

Thanks! The weather is quite ridiculous, but indoors, the AC tends to be freezing…so the blazer helps with that. =P

Silk blouses always look so nice, but I’m terrible at maintaining them…too lazy and cheap to take to dry cleaners…and when i hand-wash they get all wrinkly ~sigh. But your outfits look very sophisticated..I like the faux suede blazer..fits nicely on you!

Silk is my weakness, but I don’t wear them enough to put a major dent in my dry cleaning bill. Steaming helps with the wrinkles and a light press for the extra tough ones.

What a gorgeous blouse! My favorite is autumn! :)

A vest is on my “want” list! I am getting so many great ideas from this PFC!

I love the last outfit that you posted, the vest, the jacket and the pink blouse peeking out from under (sigh). You did a great job with this challenge though I am not surprised since I have always thought your style incorporates a lot of pieces that transcend seasons.

Thanks! I try to make the best use of all my pieces so I can wear them more often! =)

I adore the silk blouse, so dreamy and floaty! I am definitely loving the equestrian look and it is my favorite out of the three you styled it in. =0D Cute belt in your summer outfit!

Ooh, love the equestrian outfit. I’m a sucker for tall boots. And I love the vest too! I’ve always liked the look of vests but never bought one because they seem to be more accessories than clothing because they always need to be worn with something else. But judging from your outfit, it might be worth getting!

And I hear you on vanity sizing. I have items in a simple size S from Express and BR from years ago and they fit me fine, whereas extremes such as 00 and XXSP are needed now. Sigh.

OOh..I love the second and third outfits. Especially the second one. Your legs look really long and slim, and the layering is great. I love Madewell! Their scarves and v-neck tees are definitely wardrobe staples of mine.

Jess,
I love all of your outfits. You have unique style when it comes to fashion. My favorite is the second outfit. The vest is an interesting piece to add to the outfit. I can’t believe you worn size 4 back then. It’s crazy, isn’t it? I can’t remember when was the last time I purchased stuff from BR.

Thank you. I’m still figuring out my “signature” style, but I think I’m on the right track. I used to really love BR and now, the feeling has waned a bit.

Love this silk blouse! It looks so luxurious. You definitely look like you stepped out of a Madewell catalog in your fall look =)

Lovely blouse and I really like all of the ways you styled it, very nice. The second outfit was very equestrian, love, love, love it. The last outfit was perfect for the office and all of your pieces fit you so well. Your hair looks great at this length by the way, so adorable!

Oh I love your blouse! I am not surprised why you had to break your shopping ban to pick it up. :) I really love the first two outfits. I think the second one especially is my favorite, because that vest looks so you! Great inspiration!

My favorite is #3. The equestrian look is absolutely timeless, classic, and chic – love the look on you!

@Banhannas @Em @Callandra @SewPetiteGal: I’m glad equestrian is in this season because I love how it looks!

@Jess @Cee: Madewell is one of my fave places to shop. But the prices keep rising that I’m hoping that the sales more than make up for that! =)

Thanks! Love black on black since it helps elongate the look of the leg and I need as much length as I can get! =)

LOVE the 2nd outfit! I have the same blouse but it’s been pretty humid and hot to wear it yet. Love the ideas!

Whoa, I love that top and like everyone has said, the vest + boots are genius! You look fabulous in that outfit.

Alexa Chung has some seriously great style and I really wanted to check out the collection at Madewell. How do you like their jeans? Been wanting to stop by Century City to try some on!

I only have one pair of Madewell jeans, but I love them to death that I’d wear them everyday if I could. They have such a wide range of styles and washes, it’s quite a feat. I haven’t figured out the different cuts yet but I know they’re all very well-constructed with a hint of stretch. You should definitely check it out. Prices are on the higher end but every once in a while, they have great sales where I scored my skinnies for less than $25.
