Review: Superdry Outerwear

October 6, 2010

When it rains, it pushes me to go out and do things…like hang out with friends or go window shopping.

I did both, separately.

If you’ve never heard of Superdry, it’s ok. It’s a British brand. When I first encountered this brand, they had a pop-up store at Hollywood and Highland. There, the extremely energetic SA told me that it’s a British brand that does its own take on Japanese designs based on vintage American sportswear. Talk about a mouthful. Basically, it’s a fusion brand that looks sort of like American Eagle, A&F, and Hollister.

I think they really excel at making intriguing and detailed outerwear. Since they recently opened shop at the Beverly Center, (less than two weeks ago) I just had to show a couple of styles that they have available in Small. They do have X-Small sizes, but it seemed quite rare to find and there weren’t any at the time I was there.

The sweater army jacket (also available in black)

I know anoraks and parkas are huge for fall, especially in this army green. But I never would have considered getting one until I met this beauty. The thick sweater cuffs to make it super cozy and the overall design is slimming and has great structure.

As a size Small, the shoulders fit great, the sleeves are a little long (which I don’t mind) and there’s enough room to wear a thick sweater underneath. I’d prefer an XS since it doesn’t get cold enough for thick sweaters and a coat…but if you’re in cold weather country, this might be just the thing for you.

The Angelina Leather Jacket

I’ve been looking for a great leather jacket for some time and Superdry has several different leather jacket designs. Most of them run in black but a few were in a dark brown. This one has four pockets on the front. The sleeves are too long and I could wear a chunky knit under this as well and it’d fit. When zipped, it doesn’t look that boxy and the length isn’t so bad either.

The Scrambler Leather Jacket

This one is probably my favorite out of the bunch. Simple and sleek, this was right up my alley. The sleeves again are too long, but the fit was just right. It’s slimmer than the previous leather jacket. If it was in XS, it’d be a really snug. So the Small fits well for this style.

SUMMARY

Superdry has great outerwear and it fits pretty well on me and the Small sizes could work as well. I’m definitely drawn toward the last leather jacket and if the XS ever comes in stock, I’ll probably be the first one in line.

Since these jackets are well-constructed and superbly designed, the price is not cheap. The jackets run from $100-300 depending on the style. Their thin raincoats go for $100 and the leathers are about $300. Personally, the price fairly reflects the craftsmanship and thought that goes into these designs and since they are an overseas brand, their sizes run smaller than a lot of American ones.

They have so much more than jackets, but I’ll probably share those another time.

I agree – the last leather piece is my fav. I haven’t seen Superdry outerwear before but I like it so far :)

Whoa what a coincidence!! Yesterday my gf tweeted that a Superdry opened here in San Francisco!

I LOVE that first jacket~ it’s totally my style! I just love how Japanese (and I saw a lot in Korea) include a fake 2nd layer inside that peeks out, like the collar and sleeve… it’s such a cool look IMO. And I too like long sleeves hehe.. i think it’s so adorable when it covers half the hand.

I really like the grey jacket the girl is wearing on the homepage.. but I can’t find it online :(

I love that first jacket! It’s exactly what I’ve been looking for.
Thanks for posting about this brand! I’m going to have to stop by their store soon.

That first jacket is really cute but I am not crazy about the leather ones you modeled…I really dig the fitted leather jacket look and the ones you tried on seem big for your frame. Did you end up getting the first jacket? I can’t wait for more reviews, I love learning about new brands.

I didn’t end up getting the first jacket since I’m hoping that the XS will come in so it fits more snugly. So cute though.

I really like the Scrambler jacket! I have been searching for a leather jacket similar to that one with no luck yet. Unfortunately no superdrys down in this neck of the woods :(

I hear ya, Superdry only has a few stores in the states but I think they’re expanding. If you go on vacation to SF, NYC or LA, there’ll be a store. =)

Both jackets look darling, but I think the anorak looks better. The leather jackets look a little stiff and not leathery. Maybe that’s because they don’t fit you as well as they could. The anorak is awesome – scruff meets chic.

I’m going to have to see if Superdry is sold here in NYC!

The leather jackets are definitely leather, it has weight and it’s pretty supple as well. It guess because the jackets are looser on me, it doesn’t reflect how great they are in real life. They have a Superdry flagship store in NYC!

The sleeves on all of the leather jackets just look too, too long to me. I do like the army-inspired one though!

The last jacket is probably easiest to style, but I have to say I’m warming up to the army green look this season.

i was just going to suggest trying their online website for XS but I see that it’s sold out! Boo!

That first jacket would be perfect for you in XS. I absolutely adore how it comes with a cozy sweater inside, and I think the silhouette suits your style very nicely. Thanks for sharing about this store .. have never heard about it before!

Thanks! I’m going to wait and see when the XS comes in if I’m going to purchase anything, but it’s at a better price point than Mackage.

I got the necklace at Free People, it’s the one I mentioned in my shopping ban.

Rain makes you want to go out and do things? It has the opposite effect on me lol. But I feel like I should check this store out since I do live close enough to one… will stop by the next time I’m at Beverly Center :)

It’s weird, but when it rains, it makes me antsy. I don’t want to be stuck inside so I go out and visit people and stuff. =P

The first jacket is my fav! So often that style of jacket is just box-like, but this one is nicely fitted!
