Introducing the Reader’s Corner

October 14, 2010

The reader’s corner will be a new segment of my blog.

I want to increase the level of reader involvement because it’s not just for me; it’s for all of you. After all, who wants to hear me babble all the time?

We all seek inspiration from multiple sources and sometimes, even the same sources. But the elements that we’re drawn towards can be wide and varied. It’s like the elephant and the blind men vignette. We each have our own style, but when we put all our ideas together, we get a fuller and more complete scope of the fashion we see every day.

As much as I love looking through runway photos, I’d much rather know what people actually wear on a daily basis and their inspirations.

As for my inspiration, I adore the classic fashion muses like Grace Kelly, Audrey Hepburn, and Elizabeth Taylor (especially Liz Taylor). But I also look at the more accessible stylings of Rachel Bilson, Jessica Alba, and the cast of 90210. Plus, there’s always the J.Crew catalog, Shopbop trends, and the Zara lookbook to uncover great styling tips.

I love classic silhouettes with a relaxed casualness indicative of a Cali city girl. At the same time, I’m attracted to funky vintage elements that’s a mish mash of the boho-hipster and the wannabe rocker/girl-next-door. I’d want to be chic and amazingly stylish, but honestly, I think I have a ways to go. The experiments along the way keeps it interesting.

How about you readers?

Who and what are your sources of inspiration and how would you describe your personal style?

This is a great idea! I absolutely agree that while it’s fun to look at what models and celebs are wearing, I also enjoy seeing what the girl next door wears too. I don’t get out much and I mostly see professional dress, so I’d love to see what trendy clothes people wear for fun and more casual styles.

As for me, I have no style.. I’m ashamed to admit that I dress for convenience rather than trend. I wish it weren’t so! I adore Nicole Richie, Lindsay Lohan, Taylor Momsen, Kate Moss, and Olsen twins. Hehe I guess my taste runs mostly to California style based on my inspirations :D

I tend to see more people dress more casually, so people don’t really wear suits where I am unless it’s a very important meeting. And I have to find inspiration from people outside my circle of friends because they aren’t that into fashion. =P

I don’t really look too much at runway outfits except for general trends like camel, faux fur, velvet, etc. since they aren’t really practical for my life or budget. If something is very trendy I will buy it if I think it will last more than a season, like a camel coat or a leopard print cardigan. I am more inspired by catalog and magazine styling since these are more practical for my life.

I always see trends cycle back and if I miss it the first time around, I know it’ll be back sooner or later. I don’t shop according to trends, just whatever catches my eye. But I understand how the clothes featured in catalogs are more practical…it’s what I’d actually buy since it’s a bit toned down from the runway styles.

Cool feature idea! I too rarely pour over runway photos like many bloggers, but rely on those bloggers and magazines who do, to curate the trends for me LOL. Real life style is so much more interesting and attainable! It sounds like we have similar style. As far as celeb inspirations go, mine are Nicole Richie, the Olsen twins, Gossip Girl, and of course bloggers!

How true. I let other people do the research and package everything so I can get a heads up of the latest trends. Love your inspirations too! =)

I LOVE browsing J.Crew catalogs too. I also find Ann Taylor and LOFT styles to be very wearable as well. As for actual people, my ultimate style icon has got to be Olivia Palermo. She wears everything so beautifully.

I guess one of the reasons why I didn’t feel comfortable with the label “fashion” blogger is that I was never one to pore over fashion magazines or know who’s doing what on the runway. I’m definitely a casual girl, but I love classic and pretty pieces and am constantly trying to make my closet of randomly acquired items (usually on sale) work and somehow manage to look put together in the process :)

I go for practicality and comfort. Too many times I see fashion bloggers wearing 4″ heels and I”m thinking were they just sitting and not moving all day to wear them? I also like adding feminine details to my outfits which I recently noticed. It’ weird because I never thought of myself as a feminine girl, more relaxed and simple.

Hmmm…fashion inspiration… I love magazines and will sometimes get inspiration there but I have to say that my aesthetic generally revolves around details. Embellishments, buttons, zippers – anything architectural. In practical shopping, I turn to LOFT and BR.

Style inspirations: Michelle Williams, Jean Seberg and Sofia Coppola with a smattering of Audrey Hepburn. Being petite, it’s hard to pull off the fashion mags/runway looks so I just stick to the classics and essentials with one or two quirky items thrown in. I find that it works most of the time.
