Petite Fashion Challenge #3: The Look for Less

October 28, 2010

The Challenge:

Who is your celebrity style icon?

Pick an outfit from your favorite celeb and show us how to recreate that look for less. Usually, your style icon reflects your personal style and also your body type.

Carey Mulligan is one of my favorite actresses.

Love her hair, love her style, and her bubbly personality…need I say more?

I’ve been scouring the web trying to find a unique look that I’d love to emulate when I stumbled upon this post of her. It’s cute and though she’s probably dressed in costume for an upcoming movie…I like it.

So with this photo of Carey Mulligan as my inspiration, I looked into my closet to find a similar ensemble. Instead of copying the outfit exactly, I wanted to capture its essence while putting my own spin on it.

I’ve been looking for a great fair isle sweater for a while, but it always seemed inappropriate unless I was on the ski slopes of Switzerland.

I happened to come across this ruffled cardigan at a kid’s store, it jumped out at me. It fits in the sleeves, it’s not boxy, and a tiny bit of sequins makes it quite special.

Outfit Details: Justice ruffle cardigan – 14, Le Chateau knife pleat skirt, Urban Outfitters braided belt (find it here), Payless pumps

I feel like I should know Carey Mulligan from somewhere… =P I like your sweater + skirt combo more, the fit and the colors go nicely together. Great job!

She was in An Education and Wall Street 2. Not so famous, but she was dating Shia LeBouf for a while.

I like yours better than the celeb! I think the length of your skirt works so much better!

I didn’t have a long skirt handy, so I just used the longest one I own and it turned out pretty well! =)

I think you were successful in capturing the essence of the celeb outfit, while making it more wearable and looking more polished!

I like your version better. It’s very boho chic and the sweater looks cozy and adorable on you. Suits your haircut!

Thanks! I knew her outfit was very boho-esque, but I think I made it look more like a 50′s housewife going on a winter vacation. =P

I would have never thought that a Fairisle sweater could look so good with a skirt! I love your look and agree with PAG that your version is better.

Yea, I had the same idea about fair isle sweaters, but this style was so different than the usual sweaters that it goes with everything!

Thanks! This is one the few times I’ve worn a belt over my cardigan and I’m still not used to it…but it does look nice. =)

Your version is a lot more cohesive compare to original. I also like the belt contrast to the sweater. Really cute outfit.

How tall are you? You seem to be able to pull off the below-the-knee, but not floor length skirt quite nicely!

Reply

admin October 29, 2010 at 9:38 pm

I’m 5’1″. Not that tall, but the proportions of the outfit make the skirt easier to manage. =)

Love your fair isle sweater!! Looks so comfy and chic — perfect for the cooler weather. And I’m definitely impressed with how well you rock the below-the-knee skirts too!

Love it! I would never think to wear a sweater like that with a skirt but you and Carey prove that it can be done :)

Thanks! I never would have thought that either until I came across her photo. =)

I like how Carey Mulligan’s look is different from other chosen celebs. And you did a great job re-creating it while making it more wearable. Nice job! :)

Thanks! To me, since it’s a challenge, I wanted to push myself to try something new. Other celebs have a lot simpler looks that are similar to what I wear already, so I wanted to push the envelope….a little bit anyway. =)

You look great!!

I love that you used the look to inspire you to create a look that is more suitable for a petite! How cool! I love the sweater…would never think Justice!!

Thanks! I have the feeling that Carey Mulligan is petite, but it’s so hard to tell with Hollywood actresses. My look is less cumbersome (and I’ve had tripping problems with long skirts in the past) so I went for something shorter, but still has a longer hemline. As for the sweater, that’s what I thought too…it stood out in a sea of pink and glitter.

@Callandra @ MizzJ: Thanks, I was going for the “girl next door” kind of look.

@Khatu @Elle @Curls and Pearls @PetiteXXS: I love Carey’s look but my closet only has “practical” things, so it’s definitely something I can see myself wearing out in public.

@Gracie: I agree, Carey’s outfit does look a bit mismatched, but since I have boring colors, everything kind of works well.

@ TInyinTexas: Thanks, I just took what Carey had and put my own spin on it. =)
