The Problem with Skirts

November 8, 2010

I like skirts but I think it’s hard to wear because they’re kind of awkward.

Is it too long or too short?

Is it too flared, straight, or tapered?

Does the waist sit at the right place?

I am never satisfied with the state of my skirt collection and I wish I had better skirts. Out of the 14 I currently possess, I only love…three.

It’s not that the skirts are ugly, but I don’t think they’re versatile. You can wear it with a blouse tucked in or tucked out…and that’s about it. It’s difficult to make them longer or shorter, roll them up or what have you. Still, I need to make the most of what I have already.

Like this J.Crew silk flared skirt. When I want it to hit my knees, the waistband sits perfectly at my hips. But if I want it shorter, I need a belt to make it tighter around the waist and it looks like a paperbag skirt. Not quite sure if it looks alright, but it’s wearable.

So this week’s challenge:

Incorporate a skirt/dress into every outfit.

How about you? What do you think about wearing skirts?

Outfit Details: Lucky Brand shirt- XS, J.Crew skirt – 0P, Bitten by SJP vest – S, American Eagle necklace, Madewell calf hair belt – XS/S, Steven Madden Tuxxedo oxfords

i love skirts!! i wear skirts probably 95% of the time as I find pants / jeans are more ill-fitting on me. this skirt looks really great on you and i like how you played with the proportions a bit by adding on the vest.

cute pictures too, btw! :)

I love your color combo in this outfit! Looking forward to seeing how you incorporate more skirt/dress outfits :)

I have a love-hate relationship with skirts primarily because I have a love-hate relationship with my legs :P Generally, I prefer skirts to be just over the knee (though I know this is petite no-no) to expose as little leg as possible without going Amish.

I love wearing skirts/dresses. I think the challenge for me would be to NOT wear them for a week lol. Seriously though, this look is great on you. I love the vest.

I love skirts! I usually wear them over tights now that the weather’s colder but today I tried to ride my bike in a peplum one and that was not pretty xD Skirts are the anti-bike.

i like skirts well enough. i actually wear them almost all the time for work in the summer because they’re so much cooler – no matter the material, pant legs are just stifling in 90-degree plus weather. i wear them less often in cold weather because, well, it’s cold. tights somewhat make them warmer. my biggest issues with skirts involve mobility and modesty. i have to worry about the wind blowing them up or whether i’m showing too much leg when i cross my legs. and you just can’t sit like a man when you’re wearing a skirt! lol.

it’s important that a skirt flatters your figure so it’s best to find a skirt style that suits you and to just stick to that style. it’s true that skirts often set the tone of the outfit and that they’re not as versatile as let’s say, a sweater.

This should be fun. I only own one pair of pants and I only wear them when I absolutely, absolutely have to. I hate pants because I’m too curvy for them to fit correctly without heavy alteration. I have a size 4 waist and size 10 hips–when you’re shaped like that, it’s pants that are the enemy.

I actually like the skirt on you, the length and fit. Since it flares out, I’d probably use a wider belt to define the waist. I love skirts for the summer, in the winter…not so much. I’ve yet to get accustomed to wearing tights haha. Looking forward to your other skirt outfits this week!

@Kileen: Wow..skirts 95% of the time!?! I think pants are more comfy than skirts, but I’ll have to test it out this week. =)

@SewPetiteGal: Since the weather here doesn’t feel like fall, I gave my outfit fall colors instead. I like some below the knee skirts, but it’s tricky since the proportions have to be just right or it’ll look bottom heavy.

@GoodGirlGoneBlog: LOL. I’ve been a tomboy for most of my life, so dresses and skirts aren’t a natural thing for me. But I’m working on it!

@Angie: I’ve seen people wear skirts while riding bikes and it always amazes me that it doesn’t catch. But I guess it depends on the type of skirt.

@Em: I agree with the mobility and modesty issue. I still wear shorts under most of my skirts (unless it’s body-skimming) because it just feels more appropriate. Then again, that’s probably something I’ve learned from my Catholic high school days.

But as for skirt styles, I like wearing different ones since it gives me more leeway to create outfits. I get bored if I only have one set style of skirt…like only pencil skirts or only A-line ones. Then again, as long as it’s flattering and you love it…skirts are fabulous!

@ReallyPetite: Thanks! I’m learning from other bloggers that skirts are my friends. So I’m hoping that it’ll be more natural to me to pull skirts than it is to wear pants.

@Yvette: I have the opposite problem, I usually have to alter my skirts more often than pants. Most of the time, I need to get them hemmed or the waist taken in when it comes to skirts. We all have our little quirks and my body isn’t as skirt-friendly.

@Cee: I will definitely try a wider belt. I just love skinny belts so that’s the first thing I picked up. Hopefully my skirt looks will look nice and not awkward. =P

I prefer skirts, mainly because of my inability to find pants that fit (now remedied by my custom pants pattern). But I understand what you mean about how they can be limiting. I think that is why I own so many. I like fitted pencil skirts because they look professional, but they are not comfortable. My favorite skirts are a collection of stretch lycra minis that I got for free when I was on a pro cycling team (we were sponsored by an athletic wear company and the skirts were athletic-inspired).

I lived in those skirts for 4 years and only stopped wearing them when I needed to put together a “grown up” wardrobe.

My favorite skirts sit below my waist so I can eat and drink and still be comfortable. I also recently discovered that it is darn near impossible to get in and out of a car easily in a fitted pencil skirt.

I have many, many skirts and like you, I only LOVE about 3 (other than the lycra ones).

First time on your blog… so cute! I love that you’re my size (I’m 5″0) so definitely coming back to see what outfits you come up with. I’m also thinking about trying your petite fashion challenge but how can I narrow down my fashion icons to just one lady?! :)

I am right there with you when it comes to skirts! Finding the perfect one is like a double rainbow, it leaves you slack jawed and amazed. I used to never wear skirts and dresses and now I just can’t get enough.
Can I have your oxfords and vest? They are adorable!

I think this skirt is adorable with your oxfords. Great color scheme! I do agree though that every girl is picky about where her skirts hit, how fitted they should be, and where they should come up to at the waist. I am starting to love all the skirts in my closet after shelling out the money to get them altered, but I have nothing like this flirty Fall-colored one. It kind of reminds me of Kelly’s J.Crew wool one too…I want casual skirts!

I like skirts but I definitely prefer pants (I’m not that ladylike). I do like that skirts add polish without trying as much..

@Kerry: I tend to like skirts that sit lower too because it feels more comfortable, but I think high-waisted skirts look really nice and polished. I guess I just have to sacrifice a little bit of comfort for that. =P

@Emily: Thanks for stopping by! As for the petite challenge, you don’t have to have only one icon, just one to imitate. But we’re having another one this month! =)

@Jen: I’m branching out to push myself to try new things and skirts are one of those challenges. I love my oxfords since they make everything a little quirkier. And a vest always adds a great pop of interest!

@PAG: I need to take a couple of my skirts to the tailors, only I’m hesitant to do so since they’re not easy to alter with side-zippers or pockets. As for the skirt, it does look a lot like Kelly’s but I like that it can be casual and dressy.

@Angeline: I agree, skirts always add that extra oomph to an outfit that you don’t always get with pants.

Wow you’re venturing to all kinds of places for your pics! So brave :) I love the idea of skirts, but agree with you that they’re not the most versatile kind of clothing because each has a certain “look” (and the length contributes to that). I do wish I wear my skirts more often though.

Most of my locations are the same place, but from different angles, so it looks like I’m in more places.
