Review: Casualmere Scarf

November 10, 2010

It’s scarf season!

Even though I’m in California and the weather isn’t as dynamic as other states, I still love wearing scarves.

The other day, Casualmere sent me a scarf to review. As an eco-friendly company, Casualmere products use 100% viscose made from bamboo. The material is sourced from China and the OCIA-certified organic bamboo is cultivated on sustainable plantations. Casualmere also donates a percentage of their sales to cancer research and the California Oncology Research Institute.

Not only is the company sustainable, the products are affordable. The prices range from $15.95 to $29.95 for basic t-shirts, dresses, and scarves. The bamboo knit is lightweight and soft with some built-in stretch and draping. Though it’s machine-washable, it’s best to let it air dry. Casualmere provides simple basics as an alternative to mainstream retailers.

So back to the scarf.

As a petite, most scarves tend to be too chunky or too long for my frame. The Smooth Flat Knit Bamboo Scarf in Plum is soft to the touch, fairly warm, and the perfect length for a double wrap scarf. It has just enough fabric to cover my neck without overwhelming my body.

Outfit Details: American Apparel dress – XS, Casualmere scarf, H&M belt, Payless pumps

Since I love remixing, I wanted to test out a belted style I saw at J.Crew. The style looks like an obi belt from afar, but it was actually a scarf with a belt wrapped around it.

My other scarves are too thick to pull off this look, but the Casualmere scarf had way better results. Since it’s thin and slightly sheer, it doesn’t feel like I’m wearing a huge swatch of fabric around my midsection and it didn’t add bulk to my waist.

Hooray!

Outfit Details: American Apparel dress – XS, Casualmere scarf, American Eagle belt, Madewell necklace, BCBGeneration “Pony” boots

Now that I’ve tried the Casualmere scarf, I’m definitely curious about their tees and dresses.

What do you think about the Casualmere scarf?

*Disclaimer: This is a non-sponsored product review. I received the scarf from Casualmere as a product sample and no money was exchanged.

Love the scarf especially the color. The purple looks gorgeous against your simple black dress. What a creative way to wear the scarf as a belt!

Thanks! I wanted to try something new with the scarf instead of just wearing around my neck! =)

Wow the prices of this company are quite reasonable. That colour is really nice on you. I’m a huge fan of scarves and I LOVE the way you wore it as a belt! You might have to do a tutorial on this one – I don’t think I could manage to tuck it all properly LOL!

The scarf looks so soft. I want to reach into my monitor and touch it =P The color is such a vibrant purple, I really think it could go with a lot of things! The way you belted the scarf is so clever. I’m always looking for new ways to wear scarves, so I may have to steal this look =)

@oomph: Thanks! I like chunky sweaters and scarves, but I do enjoy the lighter versions as well.

@Simple Subtle Style: Thanks! =)

@Kileen: I really love the scarf and it feel so soft too. I love figuring out new ways to wear things.

@Curls and Pearls: It’s great that Casualmere is affordable so that you can try out their products! =) I might do a tutorial in the future, it just takes a little finesse to get it all tucked in right.

@Cee: The scarf is super soft and the color is versatile! Definitely try out the styles! =)

The “obi” belt looks fantastic! I second the vote for a tutorial.
Also, Casualmere sounds amazing (comfy, affordable, and charitable!) but I’m scared to click through because I might just violate my shopping ban…

It’s a gorgeous color and what a cool trick with the belt! I don’t think my mid-section can pull it off but you look fabulous!

@Really Petite: LOL. The scarf is pretty amazing and in such a wonderful color too! =)

@Shannon: I’m really diggin’ the obi belt look and I had someone comment (positively) on it too! When you’re off the ban, check it out! =)

@Linda: Thanks! I like trying new ways to style scarves.

@The Little Dust Princess: Purple is one of my go-to colors, so goes with so many things in my closet.

@Liz: Thanks! It might seem counter-intuitive to wrap a scarf around your midsection, but it makes you look svelte! =)

@Jen: Thanks! The belt look seems to be popular! =)

@Cara-Mia: I love the AA dress, it’s so versatile and comfy!

@SewPetiteGal: LOL. I can’t take all the credit, I saw the style at a J.crew store and I had to try it out. Sometimes, it looks great in the store but not so good IRL.

@Heidi: Thanks! The belt was one of the more creative ways to style the scarf. =)

I love how the faux-obi turned out! I’m going to have to pull out my long scarves and do some experimenting soon.

Hi you looked soo cute!!! I am coveting your pony boots. Are they true to size?

@Angeline: I think I’m going to be wearing the faux obi around a lot more often!

@Sophia: The boots are awesome. I usually wear 6 or 5.5. I got them in 5.5 and they fit a little roomy with thin socks.

Wow I love the second look!! Maybe you should do a quick tutorial about how to wear a scarf as a belt, because I’m not exactly sure how you managed to tuck the ends in so neatly like that! :)
