When the Lights Go Down in the City

December 29, 2010

In San Francisco, six young ladies gathered at 5A5 Steak Lounge on a cold and rainy Tuesday for a bite to eat.

When you walk through the doors, a darkened corridor leads to the hostess. As you turn the corner, the space opens up revealing two areas, the lounge and the main dining room.

Since it was Happy Hour, we took a corner table in the lounge and indulged in some delicious food and drinks. It was my first time meeting everyone in person and we chatted the night away like old chums.

From left to right: Serena, Jess, Pam, Susan, Sophia, and Kileen

Kileen and I, the ‘out of towners,’ received many recommendations for places to eat and things to do in the city by the SF natives. With these new friends, I’ll soon be less of a tourist and more of a local.

Chicken Yakitori

Anyways, back to the food at Happy Hour.

The chicken yakitori was juicy, tender, and slightly sweet. We had a bit of a fork snafu with the skewer while attempting to separate the chicken pieces.

We know better now. Do not put the skewer in between the fork’s teeth, it will get stuck. Instead, insert the fork on the chicken and slide down. =P

Truffle Fries with Sriracha Aioli

The Truffle Fries are one of 5A5′s best-sellers with a rich, crunchy exterior and a soft interior. The aioli balanced the heaviness of fries with a subtle spicy kick. You can’t go wrong with French Fries!

Beef Kebab with Ikari Aioli

The Tuesday special was the Beef Kebab with Ikari Aioli. The beef was very tender, it almost melts in your mouth. But the portions compared to the Chicken Yakitori was less than half the size. Since this place known for their high quality beef, this is no cheap cut of meat.

Salmon Shooters

Another signature item are the sashimi shooters. These little bites are full of flavor and texture. The Asian influence on these dishes is more prominent with the mix of ingredients such as shiitake, green onion, and red radish.

With tasty dishes and rounds of laughter, we had a blast getting to know each other and swapping stories. Rainy days don’t get me down, in fact, it’s quite the opposite. When I can spend it with such good company, it makes everything brighter and happier.

Here’s to new friends!

@The Little Dust Princess: The food looked so good, I just had to share. That’s the inner food blogger talking. LOL =)

@Really Petite: Thanks! For this particular post, I used a regular point and shoot – Canon Powershot SD790 IS. It’s kind of old, but with the manual settings it works great for me. But for the other posts with SLR quality, it’s a Nikon D90.

I’m glad we got to meet! I agree with Sophia that your first photo is amazing. I also like the last photo, but it would be perfect with you in that empty spot next to Serena. Kileen’s annual get-together idea sounds great. See you again in the near future! =)
