Last night at Rickshaw Stop in San Francisco, I had the opportunity to attend Fashion Feud: Round One.
In a quiet section of Fell Street in an unassuming location, Rickshaw Stop provided an intimate setting for the design competition. Outside the venue was quiet and still, but inside, the air was abuzz with excitement.

Fashion Feud is similar to Project Runway in that it gives local designers more exposure. With three rounds plus a final, two designers per round will utilize the same fabric to create a garment in an hour which will be worn by two models. The judges will vote on their favorite and the audience will also have a vote through Fashism. The winner will compete in the final to become the top designer of the city.

Jen, Mary’s model, getting volume added to her hair
The hair and makeup team from Pigment Cosmetics created simple looks to compliment each designer’s dress. In the finished product, the models looked sleek and sophisticated with a low chignon and smokey eye makeup.

Adjusting and checking the fit of the dress
On one side, Crystal Hermann quickly designed a sheath-style dress for her model. With a diamond cutout and retro-inspired aesthetic, she knocked out a polished dress with a low cowl-neck back in an hour’s time with little zigzag details and finished edges.

Adding some details to the back of the garment
On the other side, Mary M. Yanez created the bulk of her garment on a mannequin. With a dramatic neckline and a slim silhouette, she left the edges raw and focused on fitting the dress to her model’s frame.

The event was hosted by Scionify, Us and the San Francisco Fashion and Merchants Alliance (SFFAMA). SFFAMA is a social development network that supports the local fashion industry in the San Francisco Bay Area. It’s a liaison between between local merchants and fashion entrepreneurs. I’ve recently joined this network since moving to the SF Bay Area and it’s similar to Two Point Oh! LA.
According to the judges, two votes went for Crystal Hermann. On Fashism, the audience vote continues for Crystal’s dress and Mary’s dress.

How cool! I would love to watch something like that. It’s like a smaller version of Project Runway!
I seriously adore Mary’s dress and wish I had the figure to pull it off. Love her usage of prints and solids.
@Kileen: It was quite an experience to see everything unfold in an hour. From initial conception to finished product, it was so cool.
@Alterations Needed: It’s definitely like Project Runway and it’s nice to see local designers show off their creativity!
@Cee: Mary’s dress is very bold and daring, I wish I could pull off that look too! =)
How exciting! I love PR and I even watch all the other fashion challenge shows (even though they aren’t as good) because I can’t get enough. It would be unbelievably cool to be able to watch it in live action!
