Conservative, Maybe.

January 14, 2011

Lately, I find myself drawn to the the color scheme of black, navy, and gray.

Sure, there’s the occasional pop of color, but it’s not enough to lighten the mood. Unlike Kileen’s Color Brigade, I’ve been on the path of anti-color and indulging in a study of textures over colorful hues.

Given the cooler temperatures in Norcal, I’ve been covering up and layering my pieces to stay warm. This is probably one of my more conservative outfits, there’s barely any skin showing! But I’m jazzing them up my Zara thigh high boots as something unexpected. The boots are perfect for cold days and when paired with a longer hemline, you can hardly tell that they’re so “outrageous.” (See other outfits with the boots: one and two).

A key staple in my closet is this silk wrap dress from Gap. I picked it up during a thrifting session over a year ago for $15 and I only have one outfit photo of it. Because my wrap dress is sleeveless, I had to “winterize” it with a slip underneath for warmth paired with a long cardigan for additional comfort.

Wrap dresses are a must-have item for any woman, especially the petite. It creates a nice hourglass shape and it looks so effortless too. The style of the dress is forgiving with a figure-flattering silhouette that slims your physique and enhances your womanly curves. You can dress it up, dress it down, and make it work for so many occasions. It’s a versatile garment and it’s one of the few pieces that look great on everyone.

this wrap dress is lovely on you and i love your mix of textures! i way to play down the thigh high boots and make it into something work appropriate. and the necklace really does stand out the neutral color palette.

i’ve actually been searching for a wrap dress for years now! i can’t seem to find one that isn’t super low cut that it’s inappropriate for work. this was an amazing thrifting find on your part!

I’m trying to mix and match more things in my closet and suddenly it seems like my OTK boots go with everything! With wrap dresses, you can wear a cami underneath or fashion tape if you want to keep it from moving around.

That wrap dress looks terrific on you! And what a steal! I can’t seem to find a shift dress that isn’t too low cut up top – it always starts coming undone after a bit. How do you keep your neckline to stay modest?

With wrap dresses, they tend to be low-cut by design unless the waist begins higher than normal, almost like an empire waistline. Faux wrap dresses are great if you’re worrried about things moving around. My wrap dress stays in place relatively well, but every once in a while, I’ll use fashion tape for additional support.

But the beauty of neutrals are that they are so easy to wear, matches everything and flatters everyone. Think of color as an accessory :-)

Nice touch with the necklace. Brightens up your face.

@Kileen: you might have to get a faux wrap dress instead b/c most wrap dresses are low cut b/c it has to cross each other below the chest area. That’s one option, or why don’t you just wear a cami underneath? mb even a peekaboo lacie cami.

@Simple Subtle Style: The necklace was a great find at M+O, too bad they’re not open anymore.

@Really Petite: Thanks: I think the wrap dress makes everything look more polished.

@Amanda: I agree, but the neutrals I’ve been drawn to are so dark and I think it tends to wash me out. I prefer lighter neutrals and I usually use a dash of color to liven things up.

@Aubrey: Thanks! I needed some color to give the outfit some extra oomph! =)

This looks so great on you! I really want one myself. I dream of owning a DVF wrap dress, but I don’t know if they’re small enough.

interesting..I had always avoided wrap dresses because for some reason I feel like they would not work for for the small chest girls like me, or the wrap dresses I’ve seen are usually looser in size. I love how the pop of color from that lovely necklace makes your greys so lively :)

@Cara Mia: I’m itching for a DVF dress too but I think it’s only possible for me if I take it for alterations, especially for the length!

@Callandra: Thanks for the compliment! Wrap dresses are silent workhorses of my closet! =)

@Olyvia: I think wrap dresses work for everyone, as long as the size fits. For smaller chested women, it enhances the bust while accentuating the smallness of the waist. =)

I really do like the pop of orange to the otherwise, dark colours. I also like that cardigan! I’ve been looking around for colourful long cardis.

@Giselle: Thanks, I try to keep a pop of color with my outfits for more visual interest.

@The Little Dust Princess: I haven’t found very many long cardigans this length, but I’ll be on the lookout cuz I’d love to pick up some colorful ones too! =)
