Easy Chunky Knits

March 16, 2011

I love the idea of sweater dressing, especially when it comes to chunky knits. I’m sure everyone else has been sick of wearing heavy layers, but I just started to get the hang of it. A few more cool days and I can squeeze in a couple wintry outfits before it starts looking inappropriate.

Tips for Wearing Chunky Knits

  • Pick a knit with one major detail as the focal point
  • Pair a slim pant or bottom to balance the volume of the knit
  • Keep the rest of the outfit relatively simple, streamlined, and sleek so it doesn’t look too busy or sloppy

Outfit Details: H&M sweater dress – XS, GapKids super skinny jeans – 12R, Emma Stine earrings, Target Merona wedges

Shop: sweater, jeans, wedges

My style is evolving again and I did another closet assessment which made me realize that I’m heading towards outfit simplicity. I don’t need lots of crazy colors, patterns, or styles to make me feel stylish. As long as it fits me well and I wear them often, that’s all that matters. Even though I’m no longer on a shopping ban, I find myself a bit disinterested in the new arrivals at the mall. I’ll just save up my money for more important things.

How do you wear your chunky knits?

Agree with all your chunky knit tips! I tend to stray away from heavier material because it’s harder for me to layer :) But I’m slowly coming around and getting on the simplicity bandwagon too.

I really like this outfit. I was surprised to see the sweater was actually a dress because it looks so good with those jeans!

Jess, I’m always so envious of the way you pull off clothes that would make me look like a middle-aged grandma! Case in point: This giant shawl collar sweater you’re sporting! It actually makes you look tall and really thin.

I tried a cowl neck before and it did not look as great on me as it does on you! I like simplicity too – it looks effortless.

Loving the chunky knit! It doesn’t look overwhelming on you at all! P.S. I have the same shoes, but in the taupe – love a good shoe for a great price! Plus they’re comfy.

Sad I can’t see your blog at work anymore! I’m not sure what happened or if you changed some settings…it only happened in the past week or so.

I love chunky knits and that sweater looks so cozy. Your tips are spot on and the most important one I think is the slim bottoms.

@Relatable Style: Simplicity is best! =)

@Kileen: It’s all trial and error figuring out how to style this sweater but I think it turned out well.

@Cee: I try to keep an open mind with most things so I’m willing to experiment with items that might not seem “petite friendly.”

@Callandra: It’s a dress but it comes shorter than mid thigh so I thought to just make it look more like a top instead.

@The Little Dust Princess: It’s definitely cozy and warm. That’s the best part.

@Really Petite: Thanks for the heads up, I fixed the button, so it should work now. =)

@Amanda: LOL. It really depends on styling and I think I lucked out with this sweater because it hangs pretty well on me.

@Jarucha: I have a love-hate relationship with cowl necks because it can look awkward, but for this sweater it looks decent.

@Leena: Thanks! That’s exactly what I aim for…minimal effort, maximum style. =P

@J: I agree, some Target shoes are totally worth the price and the comfort!

@PetiteAsianGirl: Oh no! I don’t know how that happened…I’ve been changing some things behind the scenes, but nothing that would cause it to get blocked. =(

That sweater looks SO cute on you. Warm, cozy and chic with the skinnies.

I need someone to teach me how to build a closet of good quality staples and fewer throw-away clothes. I have too much junk right now!
