When it comes to blogging, I always want to put my best foot forward. Always look presentable, look alive, and obviously, stay interesting.
But that isn’t realistic and nobody’s perfect. So this post is dedicated to all the goofs and gaffes along the way. I’ve included a few outtakes from my recent outfit posts. Have a few laughs, I know I do.
Unedited and uncut.

Quick self-photo tip
Use a tripod and remote with a 2 second delay so you have time to move around. Plus, you can hide the remote in your pocket, a bag, or toss it to the side.
My remote has a couple of scratches, but I aim for grassy areas to minimize the wear and tear. I probably look absolutely ridiculous during these photo sessions, but the photos turn out better than if I had the remote in the shot.

For every good photo I feature on my blog, there’s probably 10 or more bad ones. Since I take my own photos, I don’t get feedback from my camera telling me what to do, having someone to bounce ideas off of when I’m in the middle of a session, or asking if my hair looks ok…because it’s probably not.
But I learn from my mistakes and do better next time. It’s all about practice, patience, and having fun.

I think if I got in the habit of tossing my remote for every photo, I’d never get anything done, because I’d spend too much time trying to find it again!
Usually I just cup in my palm and if it happens to be in the photo than so be it.
And of course there are hundreds of horrible photos for every good one, but that is just how it goes. sometimes you get one that goes so wrong, it’s actually right.
I try to aim for a place where I know I can find it. But I have had it happen where it seemed like it was lost because it matched the floor too well. LOL.
Your outtakes are so cute!
I should really invest in a remote because I just use the timer on the camera, which isn’t great. I make do though.
I used a self-timer for the longest time, before I picked up the DSLR…and with that, I was much faster since I learned to shoot 10 continuous shots with my point & shoot. We definitely make do with what we have! I was lucky to have come across my new camera. =)
I love these pictures! And, I wish I had a camera with a remote. I am in need of an upgrade!
I too wish I had a camera with a remote, but my mom help me sometimes, she likes to take pics and to give funny directions: “now do a sexy pose” “now trow a kiss” “now do a sweet pose” ….

LOL I LOVE your expressions – thanks for sharing this with us! I don’t have a remote so it’s self timer for me! But I don’t take my own outdoor shots so I just run back and forth to check out the photos
Haha, love this post! Not only are Mistakes and Imperfections are OK, they’re awesome. My life is better due to some of my mistakes and imperfections!
Dude, I have no tips, I’m always out of focus.

Mae Lu @ thereafterish.!
Jess, you’re so adorable. I took about 30 pictures for each post to have 4 or 5 good ones. I have to say I am more comfortable now taking pictures in public places. It’s all about the attitude and having fun. Thank you so much the email regarding the camera. Have a great weekend!
Sigh, one of my main goals is to invest in a good camera with a tripod and remote. Thank you for making this post because I know how hard self taking pictures can be! Your photos are always so unique though, you come up with the most coolest poses. =0D
Oh my goodness…I SO can relate to this post! I can’t believe there was life before my Canon T2i, remote and tripod. I remember last year balancing my point and shoot on something steady (table, chair) and running back and forth to take each picture. I still have yet to master or even be good at self-photography. I am trying to be more creative w/my shots but darn it- its super hard doing it by yourself…
haha, sometimes these are the best photos! i literally take hundreds of photos every day and get maybe a few decent ones…sometimes one really good one, and lots of bad ones! i finally got around to ordering a remote…yay, me!

@Sydney: I think your photos are beautiful and your outfits are always amazing! =)
@Aneirys: LOL. When I have other people take my photo, I get self-conscious because I’m so used to taking my own photos.
@Elaine A: I use the self-timer too when my remote doesn’t work, so I totally know the feeling of running back and forth.
@Simple Subtle Style: Agreed. Sometimes, the mistakes make for awesome photos.
those outtakes are soOoo cute! =) i’m so jealous…you should see mine…you ladies are lucky i’m one of those headless “anonymous” bloggers b/c OMG, i can’t even imagine if i had to make sure my eyes weren’t closed in all my pics, LOL. i’d probably have to take 999 pics for every 1 that turns out OK. =P
btw, love that first outfit on you!
I have a ton with my eyes closed, but not yet with the one eye open ones. LOL. I’m waiting for that day…it’d be a laughfest. =)
@PetiteLittleGirl: I’m glad the email was helpful, I’m no expert, but I share what I know. =)
@Banhannas: Thanks! I really do try to come up with different poses and I read a lot of photoblogs so that gives me a lot of ideas to try.
@Really Petite: I agree, it’s harder to take photos on your own without direction. But it also gives you the chance to be bold since there’s nobody behind the camera as well so you can be as weird and crazy as you want and no one’s around to judge…unless you have bystanders, but who really cares anyway?
@oomph: Congrats on your remote! It’ll be a lot easier to take photos but it still takes work. =)
My tip for photos? Take lots of them. LOL. I can get pretty picky when it comes to my photos, so I just take a lot and weed out later. As for the 2 sec delay, I do it sometimes, but I’m just too impatient (even though it’s only 2 sec!). I’d really just prefer to snap fast and get out of there.
You’re so cute! : ) I really dislike seeing the remote in people’s photos. In a way, it ruins the outfit for me. I don’t really have any tips..you gave some great ones. : ) I use a Canon G11 and its self-timer. It has face detection so I could take my time posing…once it senses my face, it’ll take a few shots (depending how many shots I make it take). Genius! LOL
lol the outtakes are adorable!
i always love your fun spirit <3
maybe i'll dig up some of my goofy outtakes too =P
Love all your photographs! You look great…and adorable in all of them
Yes I am coming to the Bay Area, moving back in fact as I’m from there….hope you’re having a great Saturday!
You are too adorable, even in these outtakes. I am terrible with self photography so I’ve been recruiting family members and the bf to take my picture and because they are not used to taking “bloggy” photos I usually end up with about 1 or 2 “ok” ones from a batch of 20. Long way to go before I can even be on the same playing field as your super professional photos!
Jess, thanks SO MUCH for this post. Being somewhat newer to the blogger community, I am glad to know I’m not the only crazy person who has to take a gazillion pictures before I find one good enough to post (and sometimes never do – but post them anyway). As a testament to your self-portrait skill, I had always thought you had some fine honey snapping those photos of you outside as they always look so vibrant and great! Thanks for letting us see your blog “behind the scenes.” I already have a tripod waiting to be taken out of the box, and a remote on it’s way for my Nikon d3100!
@Cher: I try to take as many as I can and if I think I have 5-6 photos decent photos, then I end the session, usually takes 10-20 mins. =)
@The Little Dust Princess: Ohh! Face-detection, that definitely comes in handy and continuous shots too?! I still have to learn to do that!
@Annie: Thanks! I think a blog should be fun and light, it can’t always be so serious! =)
@featherfactor: When you get to the Bay we should meet up!
@Elle: Thanks for the compliment! I think my photos aren’t that pro, but I’m aiming to get it closer to that level. It’s nice to know that I’m going in the right direction.
@Lily: I’m glad you love this post. Honestly, it only looks perfect and easy from the outside, but that’s what we usually hope for when it comes to blogging. It’s the whole “smoke and mirrors” concept that we show what really goes on behind the scenes. It’s a lot less glamorous than it seems. =)
Haha, I definitely have a lot of similar “out-takes” although the difference is I DELETE THEM ASAP!! I don’t want to be reminded of my awkwardness :p Thankfully my bf takes my photos otherwise I would probably spend hours self-timing and running back and forth since I don’t have a remote.
I love this behind the scenes peek! Thanks for the tip on the delay and tossing aside the remote – I’ll have to try that!
I need to invest in a remote!
It was fun to see these photos, though.
