Color blocking is nothing new, but it is especially prominent this year.
From the Bloggers Do It Better challenge to the Color Brigade, there is no lack of inspiration out in the blogging world. But here on Stylepint, I haven’t really ventured into color blocking. It’s not that I don’t like color, but I don’t have many vibrant pieces…or so I thought. Since I’m putting the chambray styling series on hiatus (can’t give away all my secrets at once
) , it’s time for some color blocking!

What is color blocking?
It’s exactly what it sounds like with swatches of solid colors stacked next to one another. This time around, bright colors are paired together to create a fresh, youthful, and vibrant summer look.
Color schemes to rock this trend:
- Monochromatics
- Complementary colors
- Analogous colors
- Triadic colors
- Split complementary colors
I won’t go into detail about each scheme, but I’ll do my best to show an example of each for this series. Wendy did a great color theory video if you want more information.

How to add color to your outfits?
If you are usually in neutral colors like I am, adding color can be a daunting task when starting out. But there are some steps you can take to build your confidence in color. I wrote about them in a previous post and I will reiterate these steps.
- Easy: add a pop of color to a neutral outfit with accessories
- Intermediate: draw colors from a pattern/print
- Advanced: mix and match color schemes

Starting with Triadic Colors
Onto the outfit.
I started with the thrifted silk scarf and pulled three colors from the pattern to create a color blocking look. Using primary colors (red, yellow, blue) I constructed an outfit that’s bright and balanced. Pick one dominant color and use the other two for support. The red is the main focal point and the blue is a secondary asset. The yellow hue is subtly expressed through the metallic bag, nude wedges, and gold accessories to complete the look in a sophisticated manner.
Triadic color pairings:
- Primary: red, yellow, and blue
- Secondary: orange, green, and purple
- Tertiary: red violet, yellow orange, blue green /red orange, yellow green, and blue violet

While I was taking photos, I heard a low hum and I followed the sound to a small swarm of bumblebees. I haven’t seen bees in a while…but I used to think they were everywhere. Yet, this is the first time I really noticed their presence in a long time.
It was fun watching them because they’re so big and fat, when they land on some of the poppies, the petals just fall apart. The bees slip off confused as they headed toward another flower. haha #beefail

Outfit Details: Forever 21 vest – S, BCBG tunic – XXS, DIY circle skirt, thrifted Ralph Lauren scarf, Charles David Awaken wedges

oooh love the poppy flowers!
although i love colors, i haven’t ventured too far into color blocking yet because too many colors at once tend to scare me. i must still be in the “easy” stage haha. but the colors you chose here really complement each other and they’re not too loud. will this be another styling series?
I know the feeling, too many colors feels like a giant billboard on my body saying “look at me” but I soon learned that nobody really notices. Plus, there are people out there that wear such colorful outfits (for good and bad), it gives me hope that I can try it too. =)
i love the colors you chose as well as the pieces. it’s a softer version of color-blocking with the flowing materials you are wearing. great top.

Lol, the bee story made me laugh out loud. It’s so cute you captured them on film.
I LOVE how you tied the RL scarf with a loose, flowy top and skirt. The color combination is so classic (and patriotic!), and looks amazing against the cloudy backdrop. Great outfit and beautiful photos, Jess!
The bee photos made me laugh, too
Love your tunic!
I enjoyed this post! I mainly wear white, gray, pink (soft and bright shades), navy, and peachy orange, I haven’t jumped on the color blocking trend. I think I’m too scared and not sure if I can pull it off correctly. Mainly because the colors used are bold reds, blues, yellows, greens. Colors that I haven’t worn before or rarely do.
How old are those sandals? They are so cute!
Love the last picture, Jess! WOW, all saturated colors, LOVE!
i love how the your wearing nude shoes and purse with your outfit. it really puts the focus on your gorgeous top and skirt! xx
you look great! that red blouse is lovely!

@oomph: I tend to go for less structured pieces in general, but I should work on incorporating more structured pieces.
@Cee: I didn’t even notice that it was patriotic. LOL. The weather hasn’t been very cooperative lately.
@Larie: Bees are super cool…dunno why I never paid attention to them before. =)
@Kimberly: I think it takes some practice but it’s possible. Just play around with colors and experiment. =)
@Really Petite: The sandals are over a year old but they still sell them. =)
@Vicky: Thanks! The brights perk up my mood and it’s so cheery on such dreary days.
@crystal: That’s exactly right! Gotta have a focal point in the outfit without it being too scattered and busy looking.
@Petite and hungry: The blouse is quite amazing, I wish I wore it more when I first got it, but I think I’m getting more use of it now. =)
I love that blouse and great DIY skirt!! Very informational post – will have to put this into practice
Sweetie, I am so so salivating over your wedges! So summer perfect!
Boy, for a colour-phobe like me – colour blocking is definitely the bane of my wardrobe!
Love the way you did this!
besos,
ML

What I like best about color blocking is finally lots of cute clothes are available in colors instead of just black and white. Great trend report.
I started to play with color blocking trend too. Hopefully, I’ll get a chance to post my outfits soon. I love the combination of red and blue. Great post, Jess! I definitely will keep this post in mind for my future remixes.
Forgot to type my name. I am not anoy. of course

LOL, I’m not the best at color blocking, but I’m making the effort to attempt it and try something new. I might not stick with it, but at least I tried. =P
LOL @ beefail. Awesome.
I want to try colour blocking but whenever I put the outfits together, it never looks the way I intended. You, however, look fabulous. Keep colour blocking!
It takes practice as with all things…some are total duds and some are spectacular. I try to build up my color confidence so I can embrace color better than before. =)
Very cool post! I have yet to successfully “color block” but I am interested.
Colours can be very mood-lifting. you are looking very pretty
I agree, colors can affect your mood and there’s nothing like bright colors to bring a smile to your face.
Good tips! I usually stick to neutrals and black..I gotta get out of my rut! The scarf is really nice, good thrifting find!
