Farfetch, You Make Beautiful Things

July 13, 2011

When it comes to online shopping, I am always on the lookout for new places like to scour for pretty shiny things. I’ve had my eye on some expensive items as of late for long-term purchases and closet staples…after all, you do have to pay more for quality goods. It was fate when I stumbled upon Farfetch, a treasure trove for designer duds and indie brands.

To me, the creative design process is so mysterious. It seems as if beautiful garments appear out of thin air and are stitched together by elves at midnight. However, this romantic ideal is far from reality. Whenever I learn about the behind the scene experiences, it adds importance to the clothes because the brand has poured so much love and thought into its creation. That’s one of the reasons why I support boutique clothing. You get to build this relationship with the store owner, with the clothing brands they sell, and in a way, with the designer by appreciating their garments.

On Farfetch, there is an option to select boutiques from around the world. I know several LA boutiques specialize in a certain look or style, so I love browsing through their collections. Even though I’m no longer in LA, I can still find great items from those boutiques through this site.

The two main LA boutiques that I like to browse through on Farfetch are American Rag. and Traffic. American Rag has a denim bar that I love to peruse in person, poring over various washes and styles. It’s a one stop shop for premium denim since they carry many brands all in location. As for Traffic, it’s a smaller shop located in the Beverly Center but it’s known for its leather goods. From leather jackets to awesome leather boots, you can’t beat this boutique. Leather is pricey and here, you’ll find out why.

Similarly, I use this site to browse for designer sandals. Most of the time, I’m drawn to similar items at different price points and with different materials. I like simple things that are easy to wear and comfortable to walk a mile in…or at least to where I need to go. When it comes to shoes, I have been known to skimp but I think those days are over since my feet aren’t as hardy as they used to be and I prefer comfort over pain any day. So when I find comfortable but stylish shoes, I have to get them!

What are your thoughts on Farfetch and would you use this site?

This seems like an awesome website. There are so many stores! Too bad none of them are in the bay area. =( Makes me sad how the bay area is not usually included. Have you ever noticed that? Or is it just me?

Loving the Belle by Sigerson Morrison (but the price is killer). I am totally with you on not skimping out on shoes. I was never really into shoes until recently and it is definitely worth it to spend more for comfort and quality.

I love the boutiques there and it makes it easier to shop when I’m not in the area. Though I do wish there was an SF presence on the sight, but I think it’ll come with time. SF seems to do fashion on its own terms so I guess that’s why they aren’t a part of larger sites. =)
