My friend is a physical therapy buff and I wanted to share his perspective on what makes someone look good. Plus, he gave some great advice for a few preventable health issues due to our addiction to all things fashion. Enjoy! =)
I believe that fashion is one of those things that makes someone feel beautiful and good about themselves. There is nothing wrong with looking good, however after choosing a career in physical therapy I now realize how there are some things even in fashion that we have to be careful of.
There is a definite difference in looking good and feeling good. Let me explain. “Looking good”, I think is really only a part of what fashion can do for you. I believe that when you are healthy and truly feel good about yourself and your body, there is something that permeates through you. People can see not only someone who looks good but there is something extra that makes them unforgettable.
I see a lot of people neglecting their health (and finances) to get the next “It” bag or new stylish pumps. It shouldn’t be this way, but here are a some “health hazards” and solutions when it comes to the world of fashion.
Problem: Bulky purses always worn on the same side can have a tendency to cause shoulder pain and even start spinal issues that can come about later on in life.
Solution: Switch shoulders when you wear your purse to even out the stress and wear a smaller purse to alleviate extra weight on the body.
Problem: High heeled shoes raise the heel and change the alignment in your spine which can cause low back pain as well as foot-related problems like bunions, corns, and blisters.
Solution: Limit how much time you spend in high heels and opt for supportive flats.
Problem: Really tight clothing or clothes that are too small can cut off circulation and prevent adequate blood flow to your arms and legs.
Solution: Wear clothing that fits properly, skims the body, and allows for easy movement.
Now, I could tell people all these things and usually the response is “whatever”. No one ever really thinks about the consequences of what they do now. But if it meant preventing pain throughout the entire later half of your life, it might be something to start thinking about. I’m not saying don’t buy this, or don’t buy that; what I am saying is if you want to look good and make the clothes that you buy count, take care of your body. Start eating better and working out so that the clothes you buy truly make you unforgettable.
No amount of makeup, clothes, or shoes can make someone genuinely beautiful if they already are to begin with… from the inside…. Corny but true.

I get a lot of shoulder pain when I used my purses, so this year I started using small messenger purses, which doesn’t cause me any pain at all. And I usually don’t use high heels because of the pain. So for me, I ratter look casual and feel comfortable that look very fashionable and be in pain =)
These were some really great tips and I do switch off shoulders when I carry my handbags and I have a long day where I’ll be out. I know that at some point the 4″ heels will have to go but until then…I’ll savor every moment! I wish I could post the shirt gap section here at work…I have many repeated offenders and sometimes I see NO Camisole…. YIKES, your red lacy brassiere wasn’t sthg I needed to see today or any day at the office!
This is a great post. The bag thing is a great point because I’ve seen some women whose shoulders aren’t aligned when they’re walking. One side would be lower than the other because of the weight they always carry on that side from their handbags.
this is a cool read. i definitely know about the purses thing, but mostly i just have shrunk from my potential from wearing heavy backpacks since elementary school T__T … and i’m getting carpal tunnel right now typing hahaha. health hazards just from everyday living
I already had/have spinal problems because of scoliosis. My chiropractor told me to carry the bag on my elbow instead of on my shoulders and I’m trying to do that, but that gets heavy sometimes. So I’ve really been trying to use smaller purses. My friend got functional scoliosis because her bags were too heavy!
This is great post.. I liked those bag and shades which is bigger than Kate and Ashley.. LOL
I agree with all the points. I actually have uneven shoulders and I only discovered it recently when I joined the gym. I have since started carrying smaller purses and stopped wearing high heals completely
