Color Blocking: Faux Complementary

August 5, 2011

When it comes to complementary colors, the most notable pairing is red + green.

Usually, these colors remind me of the winter holidays so instead, I created a softer look with muted red and green shades. A more harmonious color scheme is easier to adopt that the strict tomato red and bright spinach green combination.

By pairing a forest green dress with a pink suede bag, you’re still participating in the contrasting color-blocking trend. This ensemble emanates a mature, carefree attitude that’s youthful but not childish.

Perfect for a seaside brunch or a trip through wine country.

When it comes to accessories, I like to keep it simple. I let the outfit tell the story while the accessories play the supporting roles. Rich brown colors and gold tones bring an earthy warmth to create a bohemian-inspired look. Thrifted braided belts are a great way to cinch in the waist and add texture to an outfit.

Suede accessories also lends itself toward the boho vibe. But you can always swap in sandals and a canvas tote for preppy sailing outfit. Or you can put on a leather jacket and biker boots to unleash your inner rockstar. The possibilities are endless.

Outfit Details: Brandy Melville dress – S, A&F tank – XS, Marc by Marc Jacobs aviators, Emma Stine earrings, thrifted belt, French Connection bag, BCBGeneration boots

Shop: dress, tank, sunglasses

With complementary colors, you can be bold and stay true to the classic colors or you can mix and match different shades together. The fun part comes in experimenting with your clothes and figuring out how different shades can work together. Other complementary color pairings aside from red+ green are orange + blue and yellow + purple.

What are your favorite complementary color pairings?

My favorite complementary color pairing right now is mustard and royal blue. I think they look great together. On a different note, the lipstick looks great on you =)

This outfit looks great Jess, and what did you do to your hair?!? I see it kind of wavy and I like it!

Great outfit! Also, I too, would like to know what you did with your hair.

I am absolutely digging this outfit on you. The shoes make it more than bohemian, the ensemble becomes downright steamy! I love it.

I agree with Jean, I rather love mustard and Royal Blue, but this outfit looks great on you!

I also DIG red and sky blue or cyan. I’ve been digging teal and red, and I also like orange and green. Sure it’s not exactly the color wheel complementary colors, but hey… they still contrast!

Very pretty! So true about switching out the shoes and accessories to give off a whole new vibe!

You are making me realize that I do not play around with color enough. Because I cannot answer your question! No clue what my two colors are! I just choose one colorful top or bottom, then the other item is a neutral (either blue, black, grey, or tan family).

I haven’t ventured into using complimentary colours, just adding a bright with a neutral in clothing and accessories.
