SFFW: Runway Highlights

August 17, 2011

With three nights of intimate runway shows, the San Francisco Fashion Week featured several emerging designers and a few veteran local brands.

Tucked away in the Mission District at Madrone Studios, there was a quiet excitement emanating from the warehouse loft. The hopes, dreams, and fears of the designers and models were about to be realized as the music started to play.

Once the first model hit the stage, everyone eagerly watched her every move and every swish of her dress. Colors, fabrics, and textures were brought to life as the models made their down the down the runway. A symphony of flashes and clicks from the photographer’s pit captured each of the designers’ looks.

The references, stories, and inspiration varied greatly from one designer to the next. The looks ranged from bohemian fairies to edgy downtown divas, seductive Harajuku girls to impeccably tailored men’s suiting.

While many designers stayed true to classic apparel design, two bucked the trend. Boditecture’s convertible dresses started off the second night with an unexpected twist. Each garment served as two such as a maxi dress which flipped to reveal a swimsuit and cape.  Additionally, Alphyn Industries crafted line of denim with smartphones and mobile technologies in mind. As fashion and technology collide, there may be more designers who will utilize new technology to their creative advantage.

As the nights progressed, the energy climaxed with a finale by Academy of Art professor, Camilia Skikos. Her line reflected a powerful and strong femininity with elegant silks with structured leather pieces. It was as if Camilia’s collection was the realization of what these emerging designers can expect in the future.

San Francisco Fashion Week is still in its infancy with plenty of room to learn and grow from this year’s run. It’s a new beginning…but of what is yet to be determined.

I would’ve loved to experience Boditecture’s garments, but all these models and their pieces look divine and I can see myself wearing all of it!

How exciting to be part of something new and the start of great things I’m certain judging by the photos.
