Greedy Much?

September 19, 2011

With all these new fall arrivals coming in and fashion week in full blast, it’s tough to resist the urge to shop.

I already picked up several items in preparation for this season so I don’t need anything else. All this shopping and spending makes me wonder, how much is enough and how much is too much?

Everyone has different ideas about what amount of clothing or shoes is “enough” or in the case of retailers…you can never have enough fill-in-the-blank.

I’ve become displeased with the state of my closet that I’m itching to ditch the whole thing and start over with a handful of pieces. It sounds absolutely absurd but there are days that I hate almost everything I own. There are very few items that truly express who I am. The clutter is overwhelming since I have to waft through all these so-so items to get to the real gems.

I’m not talking about the expensive items but rather, the items that I keep reaching for time and again…like this Viereck dress, that Madewell jacket, and those Theory pants.

Looks like I’m on another round of closet evaluations and no shopping.

I am making a list of things that I really want/need for the upcoming Fall. I will try to stick with that list and won’t buy anything else =)

I’m definitely trying to hold back the shopping reins for now. Gotta shop my closet…I know I have good things here. =)

Yeah, I know how you feel. I have pretty much everything I need for Fall already. I think adding too much more would be gluttonous. I’d rather save for accessories, like real gold and silver necklaces that I’ll have for a very long time.

Definitely! I think quality accessories make a huge difference and they last forever too!

I know what you mean!! I’ve been selling my entire closet recenty, but can’t really find any items that I could get a ton of use from, like plain black boots. I even sold my Chanel to fund… Something. I still spend almost every day unsatisfied with my crap. I don’t know what’s up :(

Our tastes are changing which probably accounts for the need to purge. I know I’m looking for things that I will love no matter what…and that’s the stuff I’ll keep forever. Be picky so you have the best of what you really want.

lol i totally know what u mean. i tossed 4 large garbage bags of clothes and donated it to the goodwill a couple of weeks ago. i also sold a few hundreds worth to crossroads too. it feels good. i think you should totally do it!

Wow! Way to go! I’m definitely on a closet purge and I think that this will be a hefty slice that I’ll be sending away. It’s going to be worth it when I only have the MVP pieces. =)

I totally understand how you feel! It’s a work in progress and there’s always tweaking to do. The best thing is you’re re-evaluating and again which shows you’re not going to get stuck in a rut or staying in a comfort zone. It’s positive! Those favourite pieces are lovely: very strong, very you! I actually don’t need a thing for this season yay!
Too much to me is when you’ve got too many clothes that you don’t even get to wear or rotate for than a couple of times.

Thanks! I’m still figuring out my style so I guess it’s only natural that I’m sloughing off the stuff that’s not “me.”

Man, I’m guilty of being greedy….its kind of shameful actually how many new pieces I bought these past two months. I’m justifying it since its my new job so I’m building my work wardrobe. I know I shouldn’t keep this up though. Thanks for keeping things in perspective.

LOL. I’m greedy…I admit. I see all these new things and I want it all too. But it’s tempered by my budget. I can’t buy everything or I’d be so broke. When you start something new, it’s almost required to get something for your new lifestyle…that must be so exciting! =)

You’re not greedy. Tastes change like the seasons, we change. If our style stayed the same, people would accuse us of being in the past.

There is nothing wrong with hating everything in your closet. It could be temporary, depending on how your life is going, how you feel about yourself, how you feel about fashion, whether you feel attached to it or whether you feel as if you’re evolving, stylewise. There are so many facets of fashion that have nothing to do with the clothes themselves.

Just try to do a purge, and get it back to a simple state, and maybe you can figure out whether your style has remained on the same wavelength, and you’re just going through an emotional/mental valley with fashion.

If so, go on another break and get muddy again!

It is true, the simplest state is where the mind is most clear. Where there is less to clutter and distract you from what is real to you. I know things have been chaotic as of late and it probably contributes to the craziness I feel about my closet. I need a change…but I wish these changes didn’t involve money. lol.

I like that you have such wise thinking. It is so true that we are living in this world of consumerism albeit plentiful in our possessions. Oftentimes, I am also tempted to add on what is unnecessary. Keep it up, stylish princess. I am encouraged by your prudency.:)

Thank you Ruth for your wonderful comment! I’m always searching for that balance between having a wartime/ascetic/minimalist lifestyle and an excessive/flashy/materialistic one…I have moments when I flip between the two and often hover in-between. I often need reminders to help keep me on track since it’s a slippery slope when it comes to buying new things. =)

You took the words right out of my mouth. I am obsessed about obtaining the perfect wardrobe and constantly purging, buying, selling to reach that perfect number. Like you, when I see my wardrobe I want to love every piece I own and be rid of the so-so ones. I also dream of my house burning down and starting from scratch. LOL. I’m down to 75 pieces of clothing and I still don’t wear everything and STILL have mediocre pieces. Why are some so-so pieces just so hard to get rid of? I also have a few that I adore on their own but never wear because they’re either too dressy or I just can’t find a good match.

I’m also putting a shopping ban on myself and trying to be more creative to wear what I already have instead of constantly chasing for perfect pieces. The temptation is too much sometimes…..

Look forward to read your next wardrobe evolution.

Wow Wendy, 75 items! I hope I can be like you someday! I know I rationalize the so-so items for days when i don’t need to dress up like when I do community service or if I’m going to a sketchy neighborhood…I don’t want to stick out like a sore thumb. lol. But this journey will help get me to a better place in the long run. The goal is not as important as the lessons you learn along the way. =)
