Indulging in Fantasy

October 17, 2011

For Halloween, my friends suggested that we should dress up as characters from Alice in Wonderland.

Normally, I don’t get excited about holidays. Growing up in an Asian household, traditional American holidays were seen as secondary to Chinese ones. But as I get older, I’m enjoying these special seasonal events, especially Halloween. In part, it’s a longing for a childhood that I never had, an indulgence in adopting a different character and personality other than myself, even if only for a night.

Halloween is the one night where you have reprieve from your life…you can be anyone you want to be. In a way, it’s the one night where you shouldn’t “be yourself.”

And that’s why I’m going to be the Mad Hatter. Since I don’t have time to create my costume from scratch this year, I bought a pre-made one and I’m altering it so that it fits better. I guess you can say it’s a halfway DIY Halloween project.

How about you? Got any plans for Halloween and will you dress up?

I am so excited to see how your costume turns out!!

Gosh…I am horrible with Halloween. I have always wanted to dress up as Sailor Moon. I bought the perfect skirt from American Apparel years ago. I am just missing everything else! Lol!

So I usually end up being Alice in Wonderland for work because it is the only costume I have.

I canNOT wait to see how your costume turns out, either! I want to see hints of it.

Our Halloween celebration is happening this weekend, and I’m going as The White Rabbit. But of course my outift is slightly provocative… of course. But it is the only time this has ever happened for me, and I wanted my last big party in Detroit to be a big deal.

Halloween is Come As You Aren’t night. “Where not you IS you.” (To quote a line from the Buffy Halloween episode in Season 2.)

Can’t wait!
