This year, I didn’t have time to make a Halloween costume from scratch, so I bought one.
Yes, I decided to go for a sexy Mad Hatter.
My friends suggested I try to look cute/sexy during Halloween since I never do. For once, I actually agreed. I think I’m more confident in myself and more comfortable with my body this year than last year. (After Tough Mudder, I felt like I could conquer the world!) In a weird, twisted way…dressing sexy is empowering.
Here’s what the original costume in Small looks like straight out of the bag…please excuse the wrinkles. I went the cute but cheeky route with the Mad Hatter costume. The costume package contained a dress, stockings, hat, and attached petticoat. There’s a zipper down the center back and a slightly stretchy midsection. Zippered costumes tend to run big, so I expected to do a little DIY.
For a “sexy” costume, I’m quite covered up!
To make it feel less like a generic, standardized costume, I made some changes so it looks and fits better. That way, if I come across anyone that’s wearing the same costume, I will look slightly different. It’s silly but I strongly dislike looking like everyone else.
- Remove sleeves
- Change the straps to a halter style
- Shorten and slim the torso
- Shorten the hem to reveal the petticoat
- Add structure to the hat
- Replace purple stockings with black ones (add bow to black stockings)
Hopefully, I can finish all these alterations in time for Halloween…I won’t reveal the full look yet, but check back next week to see the final results!
