For this month, Alli of Ski Petite issued a vacation-themed fashion challenge.
Since I skipped the last one, I had to make up for my absence and participate in the latest petite fashion challenge. I really enjoy these events because it gives me new ideas and it helps to see what other petites can create for these situations.
The Challenge
Put together an outfit made for sightseeing. It should be one that will be comfortable for walking around in and can last you from the early morning until dinner and drinks in the evening. Plus, you’re on vacation, so you’d better make sure you look good in photos, which you’ll have for years to come. You can choose just one outfit but vary it by adding or taking off layers or accessories to take you from the a.m. to the p.m. and make one outfit easier to last through the day.

Outfit Details: Banana Republic sweater – XS, M+O chambray top – 0, Forever 21 leggings, Steven Madden Tuxxedo oxfords
I tend to wear pants and sneakers (or oxfords) when I’m sightseeing since you never know what you’ll be doing during the day. I’m always the one that ends up a bit dirty since my curiosity takes me off the beaten path. For the daytime look, I went with a simple layered outfit. Chambray works all year round since it stays cool when the weather is hot, but it also keeps you warm as the temperature drops. If you additional warmth, a fair isle sweater will keep you looking chic and cozy.
When I’m traveling, I try not to wear my skinny jeans since they’re kind of constricting. So, I opt for comfort with these thick black leggings. I am one of those people who wear leggings as pants and as long as it’s not sheer and there’s no VPL…why not?

Outfit Details: Banana Republic sweater - XS, M+O chambray top – 0, Forever 21 maxi dress
Shop: sweater, top, maxi dress
For the nighttime look, I went the dressy route with a maxi dress and a pair of statement earrings.
The maxi dress is easy to pack in your tote and the earrings instantly add a touch of glamour. If the weather gets cold, you can opt to wear the chambray top or the sweater over the maxi dress. Also, the benefit of wearing a maxi dress is that you can wearing leggings underneath if it’s really chilly and the length of the dress hides your shoes (for the most part).
This is a really low-key, low-maintenance way to look chic while on vacation.

Great job with this challenge! love the idea of hiding the leggings underneath the maxidress!
Thanks! It was actually a bit of luck…it was getting windy/cold as I taking photos so I left the leggings on to stay warm.
you ROCKED that maxi dress. wow, it’s such a perfect cut, fit and length for you!
Thanks Katrina, it was a lucky find! =)
The dress is so cute. I always bring a maxi on vacation, too! Thanks for taking part in the challenge
Thanks Alli for hosting!
Great job with this challenge, Jess! You’re so creative when it comes to styling a maxi dress. I would’ve never thought to pair a sweater with a maxi.
opps..forgot to put my name =)
Wow that maxi dress looks amazing on you! How did you tuck your sweater up like that? I tried to wear a sweater with my maxi dress on the plane but it looked weird b/c the sweater wasn’t cropped – I love how you made it cropped!
I just tucked the sweater under itself to make it look cropped. Magically, it stays in place. =)
Love this idea!! So true about leggings under maxi dresses!
I still have not tried one on…but you are making me want to!!
Great job with your photos!
Thanks Michelle! I try to keep the photos interesting! =)
Jess, this is my favorite entry of this challenge! Comfy chic in the daytime, but the night look… wow! Completely unexpected, but I love how both daytime tops work effortlessly with this maxi dress. Amazing job!
Thanks Cee! I got to maximize the clothes I bring on vacation. =)
Wow you did such a great job layering for both outfits!
The maxi dress is amazing on you! Did you need to get any alterations? I tried on several this summer and they were either too long or too baggy, even at 00P (Banana Republic, I’m looking at you!)
Thanks, Cynthia! The maxi dress fit perfectly off the rack without any alterations. I know how challenging it is to find a great fitting maxi…F21 and Target are my picks for petite friendly maxis.
I like the maxi dress! It’s looks fab on you!
Thanks! =)
Oh wow, you look absolutely stunning in that maxi! Love your take on this challenge – very creative!
I love these challenges…they’re so fun! =)
I love the maxi, and that last look with the sweater especially. Maxi dresses are so versatile!
Thanks, the maxi dress has become way more versatile than I originally thought. =)
Wearing leggings is a ingenious idea!!!
) I’ll follow your advice and bring a pair of leggings with me this time!
I still remember my old days of wearing jeans that were killing me in long flights. (Later I switched to over-sized wide leg pants…
Jeans are always tough on flights…never thought of wide-leg pants! But both work! =)
Love this, Jess!
It’s so true. Leggings as pants isn’t so scandalous if there’s no Camel Toe, it’s not sheer, it’s not CALF LENGTH (hate those), and there’s no VPL. I also have to stress that lots of people who wear it often have muffin top–or worse–hip and knee rolls…
Spandex is a privilege, not a right!
I love this, and I think you did both pieces pretty well. And word on not wearing jeans when traveling. Seriously, jeans are binding and not very comfy. Nothing beats a pair of thick leggings and Chucks or Toms for travel. I want to be comfy, not look like I’m walking down a runway.

Mae Lu @ thereafterish.!
Oh so true, Mae…”spandex is a privilege, not a right!”
Leggings under a maxi is genius! And I love your Fair Isle sweater! Too cute!
Thanks Kelly! =)
