‘Tis the season for sweaters, jackets, and coats!
I’m sure you’ll be seeing my entire outerwear collection for the next few months…it’s my shopping kryptonite. Though I don’t spend a lot of money on fancy jackets, I definitely have more than my fair share. In SF, chic jackets are a must!

However that’s not the focus of today’s post.
Today, I’m going back to the 70′s and I’m taking my thrifted items along for the ride. I pulled out this polka dot dress from the corner of my closet that I haven’t worn since….last year?! I hated the sleeves, so I cut them off and made it slimmer. Looking at older posts makes me realize how much hasn’t changed. I still have that Colehaan satchel. I styled my hair the exact same way, unintentionally, as the old post. I still do that “look to the side” pose.
I’m hopeless.
But my self-photography skills are better. So something changed. HA!

Between thumbing Anthropologie catalogs, checking out the Tim Burton exhibit at the LACMA, and watching Skins UK on repeat, I’ve been hit with this gothic, romantic, raw, and emotive perspective on photography. I like things that are dark, moody, and unexpected.
Then again, it could be the residual Halloween festivities floating around in my head.

Outfit Details: H&M shawl sweater – S, thrifted polka dot dress, thrifted braided belt, Jessica Simpson boots (borrowed)
What do you think…can I pull off the 70′s vibe? AND what do you think of the new “look” of the photos? Be honest…I need feedback so I can improve and get better!

Thank you!
What a great thrifted find!!! Its definitely 70′s.
I like the photos, even before I like them too. Change is always good too! Which lens are you using? I’m debating whether to use a prime.
I’m using my kit lens for this photo set, but a 50mm f1.8 is a great starter prime. If you can afford more distance between you and the camera, I would suggest a 85mm…it’s amazing for taking portraits.
You can definitely pull of the 70′s vibe. The boots fit you perfectly in every way. I have always liked your photos, Jess. I pose the same way for every picture too. I try different ways now and then but it’s not easy =)
Thanks Sydney. I’m so fickle…I can’t decide what look I want but I know that I have to keep trying. The more I experiment, the better it becomes in the long run right?
You’ve got a great eye, Jess. The moodiness of the photos you’re trying to convey definitely came through. I could tell from the first one that something was different — different good! Two thumbs up to the outfit + posing + photo composition.
Thanks Cee! I’m constantly evolving and I think it was the natural way to go…all the better to match the weather. =)
Really enjoyed this post, Jess. I love the second picture with the big tree.
Thank you Vicky! =)
am loving everything about this outfit! especially the pattern of the dress and the comfy yet chic sweater! I am looking for a new pair of black boots as well, and loving those!
Thanks! It’s classic and it effortless…the best outfit mix! =)
I especially love the middle picture. It’s full of visual interest from your pose to where you’re looking to the landscape itself.
Also, I think your last two outfits, including this one, are winners. You do the 70s and biker chic really well.
Thank you Violet!
I think your pictures are excellent! There’s always so much visual interest in the outdoor scenery, it’s beautiful
Thank Callandra!

I’ve been itching to wear a dress with boots for a while and this one worked out well. =)
