One of my friends has an obsession with tights.
It’s not a creepy fetish-type of obsession, but she adores and collects unique patterned hosiery like those from House of Holland and Pamela Mann. With her standard black outfits, she wears tights that are bright colored or with bold prints that elicit friendly comments and compliments wherever she may be.

I, on the other hand, play it safe with sheer blacks, nudes, and the occasional dash of color à la We Love Colors. My most adventurous styles are a pair of J.Crew herringbone tights and polka dot tights.
But I’m willing to try something new.
What are your favorite styles and what do you suggest I try?

Your friend and I have a lot in common. I have always loved tights with unexpected patterns – and I like to collect them. My favorite, by far, is the Pretty Polly for HoH suspender tights, I don’t wear them often but I really adore them (even bought back ups). I am a serial tights ripper so my fascination is mostly limited to buying and then admiring them in their packaging…I wear boring old black tights in the winter that I won’t feel bad about destroying.
I’m extra careful when I wear tights…I make sure my nails have no jagged edges and my skin is smooth and moisturized before putting on a pair to prevent them from laddering. But sometimes, it can’t be helped so replacements are always necessary. =)
I love patterned tights but I hardly wear them LOL! I do like how they are worn in the picture you posted with longer, looser skirts. I feel uncomfortable wearing pattered tights with short skirts or tighter skirts. IMO it’s provocative and sexy and many girls can pull it off so well but it’s just not for me. I’m more comfortable wearing opaque tights in different colours (again, when I say different I mean boring grey or brown LOL! – but I do have a burgandy pair) but I hope to graduate to patterns one day
You are so right, I think patterned tights look best with more “conservative” outfits for a sophisticated look. I’m the same way with simple neutrals but I hope to change that!
I do wear patterned tights, a lot, it is my way of making myself different among all women wearing the same kind of working attire.
And being petite is not at all against patterned tights.
But one should be careful to chose good quality tights with beautiful patterns in order to avoid being on the same level as thes so called “sexy girls”.
I mean, as the previous comment seems to enhance, it is a pity that fancy outfit (like bold colours, different cut or patterns) should be consided as being on the sexy side.
I do have a lot of coloured and patterned tights along to plain one (but few opaque mind you I am not afraid nor ashamed of my body). So my taste are for high end tights as Wolford, Kunert, Falke… always proposing a large range of thights and beautiful and nice patterns.
And if they are sold in the US, I would highly recommend the Gerbe brand, only and last french brand actually made in France (yes I am proud of it): most of all, they are of really good quality and last and good time of wear.
I am european by the way FYI so my opinion may not be of importance for your mostly US readers but I am also a petite and a woman.
Thank you for your perspective and your brand suggestions! I only know of Wolford, but I will definitely look into the other brands. It is absolutely correct that petites can wear patterned tights and I think it adds a unique and fun way to show your personality. =)
I like the look of patterned tights, but have never ventured outside my comfort zone to actually try them out. I stick to opaque or black tights – not even grey or brown or other neutrals. I think I would like the ones with the simple, non-busy patterns though
i really want small polka dots too.
I don’t wear pants so all I wear are tights and socks. I usually stock up at Sock Dreams it takes some wading to get to their more…sedate stuff, but they’re good) and Hansel from Basel. I also like the brand Tintoretta, which you can buy at Anthropologie.
Thanks for the tips Yvette, I’ll be checking out those brands! =)
I really love pattern pantyhoses too. The are really lovely, but hard to find in my local store. Not many people dare to wear then.
