An Ode to Menswear

December 20, 2011

I often admire men’s style blogs for their ingenuity and resourcefulness.

There’s something so compelling about wearing masculine elements…whatever it may be. Lately, I’m diving head first into the world of Band of Outsiders and Paul Smith, taking cues from Jack Spade instead of Kate, and just being a tomboy all around.

Outfit Details: Old Navy peacoat – XS, J.Crew Cambridge Cable v-neck sweater – XXS, Madewell blouse – XS, Theory Kissan pant – 00, Forever 21 scarf, Steve Madden oxfords

Shop: peacoat, blouse, oxfords

I find that this outfit is a great balance…not too feminine and not too masculine, but nicely polished. Though I have yet to nail down my style, I’m getting there. I’m still rough around the edges, but I never said I was going to be cookie-cutter perfect.

A little imperfection and a dash of eccentricity makes it my personal style.

For the past several years, I’m considered as “one of the guys”…and whenever my guy friends see me in skirts, dresses, and professional workwear…they always feel compelled to comment on the “transformation.”

“So, who’s the guy?”

“Are you wearing blush AND lipstick…what’s the occasion?”

“Is there a dress code I didn’t know about?”

It’s all in good fun, of course. They get to wear jeans, tees, and sneakers to work and I prefer to dress up whenever I can. I find menswear styles to be easier to adopt because it’s all  about classic silhouettes with endless fabric and color options. You just mix and match…and it all works seamlessly together. If only women’s clothing could take some cues from the men, I think we wouldn’t fall prey to as many faux pas and misguided fashion trends.

I’ll be a “man” for the day.

I love it when you rock menswear. ;)

I think my favorite part of menswear is the tailoring. I love the sleek look of things that fit perfectly. It’s such a no brainer to get dressed that way. A closet full of perfectly fitting blazers in every color and pattern? How can you NOT look put together that way?

I love your tomboy style. I sometimes feel menswear is very simple and classic, and feel like trying. Somehow it usually does not fit me well but you look really great because of balance. I adore you.
