What was the one thing we had to do in Maui?
Go to a lu’au. My sister really wanted to see a fire dancer so we went to the Hyatt Regency “Drums of the Pacific” lu’au. We had a blast learning the history of the Polynesian islands and attempting to dance the hula.
I heard that the most “authentic” luau is the Old Lahaina Lu’au but they don’t have fire danccers and we couldn’t book tickets in time. If you want to check out a lu’au, make reservations in advance.

Clockwise from top left: Crispy Opaka with Green Mango Salad, Aloha BBQ Mixed Plate, Malasadas, Sunset Beach Shave Ice
For me, the best part of traveling is sampling the food of the region.
At the lu’au and at Aloha Mixed Plate, I got to try kalua pork, poi, lomi lomi salmon, lau lau pork, and ahi tuna poke. Since Hawaii has a lot of international influences, it’s no wonder that they have a lot of Asian fusion cuisines. I did some restaurant research through Yelp but it failed me (for once!) when it came to Tasaka’s Guri Guri. It’s a small dessert shop that sells sherbet but it wasn’t worth all the high ratings.
We went to a mix of places from fancy restaurants to local food stands and out of it all, there were a few places that really stood out.
Maui Food Recommendations
- Ululani’s Shave Ice - sunset beach with mac nut ice cream and snow cap
- Star Noodle - chicken karaage and malasadas
- Nutcharee’s Authentic Thai Good - crispy opaka with green mango salad
