Sarah Jessica Parker Looks for Less

January 25, 2012

For me, there’s no better way to laze around than popping in a season of Sex and the City and watching hours of the drama and fashion. I’ve been known to get some inspiration from Carrie Bradshaw (I’ve got a “Carrie” necklace in my own name, and I definitely sport a faux fur coat from time to time), but I also make a point to keep an eye on the lady behind character: Sarah Jessica Parker. After playing the most fashionable gal in television history for over a decade (if you count the movies), some of the wardrobe inspiration is bound to rub off.

But where does Carrie Bradshaw end and Sarah Jessica Parker’s style begin? After following SJP’s street style for a few years, I’ve found that her daily style is much more practical than Carrie’s. Sarah is a mother of three and can’t be messing around with getups like THIS. She trades crazy high stilettos for shorter sturdier heels and wears jeans instead of crazy head pieces. I’m going to share three Sarah Jessica Parker looks I’m loving right now and show you how to get the looks for less:

When life gets busy, I tend to default to a jeans-and-sweaters wardrobe. This is fine and all, but I like to take a page from SJP’s book and dress up these basics with little details that make a big difference. I am in love with her velvet blazer — velvet is definitely my new favorite fabric this winter. I also like how she tucked her loose boyfriend-style jeans into ankle booties, although it seems like a style that you’d have to get just right to not end up looking goofy. Her bold-patterned scarf and pink bag add some pops of color to her shades of blue base.

Sarah’s rocking one of my favorite trends in this photo: pairing red and pink. She’s also pulling color blocking off like a champ with her combination of fire-engine red, hot pink, and snow white. This would be a lovely look for a Valentine’s date, or even a regular day at the office. In the look for less, I added a bright orange scarf and a bold yellow bag because splashes of citrus would also complement her outfit well.

Once again we have Sarah wearing blue, but this look sans blazer is a bit more casual than the first. Perfect for running errands or shopping, Sarah sure has a knack for adding accessories to make the most basic outfit interesting. I love her big, oversized scarf, which she’s tied in a pretty-much-fabulous way. I also love her shield sunglasses, and her crossbody bag lets her juggle the kids and grocery shopping without fussing with a purse.

What about you? Do you tend to lean towards Carrie Bradshaw extravagance, or do you prefer Sarah Jessica Parker’s more practical wardrobe?

I like seeing SJP’s street style…somehow she makes comfortable and stylish work together really well. So, needless to say, I love all these 3 looks. I default to jeans-and-a-sweater too when it’s a busy OR cold day, and I really really hope that someday I’ll learn how to make these kinds of outfits fashionable too! As for the red and pink, it’s one of my favourite colourblocking combinations!
